I'm installing Ivory 1.5 on Leopard, but the installer never asks for another DVD and tells me the installation is complete. What is happening?

You most likely have the Ivory 1.5 "Rev D" DVD library. A "Rev D" disc has a part number that ends in a lower case "d". If this is the case you will need to download and install the "Ivory "Rev D" DVD Installer for Leopard" here .

In the installer, which disk should I choose to install Ivory on?

Technically, you may choose any volume in your file system that has enough space on it. But practically, it's better if the Ivory libraries are not installed on the same drive as the system, nor on the same drive that is used for recording/playing digital audio tracks. If you can, install it on its own dedicated empty hard drive.

How much hard drive space do I need for Ivory?

For best streaming performance make sure your drive has plenty of free space. Remember to keep 15% or more free for healthy hard drive performance. Here are the approximate sizes of the pianos:

• Bosendorfer 290 Imperial Grand (16.5 GB)
• German Steinway D 9' Concert Grand (13.5 GB)
• Yamaha C7 Grand (11 GB)
• Italian 10 foot Concert Grand (19 GB)

Can I install only one of the pianos on my system?

If hard disk space is limited or if you plan to use only one or two of the pianos, the installer allows you to customize the installation and select the combination of piano models you wish to install.

Will Ivory work using the RAID feature in OS X?

Yes. The performance increase is significant.

Can I move the Ivory libraries to a different hard drive? Do I have to re-install it to do so?

Yes, the libraries can be dragged to another volume without having to reinstall. Just move the Ivory Items folder to the new location. Then, all you need to do is update an alias that needs to point to this folder. The alias is called 'Ivory Items', and in OS X it is located in:

/Users/{Home}/Library/Preferences/Ivory Preferences/

In OS 9 it is located in:

/System Folder/Preferences/Ivory Preferences/

Click once on the alias, press Cmd-I for Get Info, click the Select New Original button, and select the Ivory Items folder at the new location. Alternatively, you may simply throw the alias into the trash. The next time you run Ivory, it will ask you to locate the new Ivory Items folder.

Problems when Installing Library Files

If you suspect you may have had a problem installing the library files during installation, you may confirm that the library files are intact by launching the Ivory Library Tool (also called Ivory LibCheck in earlier versions of the software).

You can find the Ivory Library Tool in Ivory Items >Tools.

This tool will confirm that all installed sample data is intact. Each library file will be verified and receive a PASS or a FAIL. If any library file gets a FAIL, its sample data is corrupt. Throw away the failed files and re-install them. Continuous reports of failure may indicate that your hard drive has a problem.

How do I un-install Ivory?

The large audio files are all kept in a folder called Ivory Items. Simply deleting this folder will remove most of
Ivory's data.

The location of each plugin is:
OS X VST: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/Ivory (OS X).vst
OS X AU: /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Ivory AU.component
OS X RTAS: /Library/Application Support/Digidesign/Plug-Ins/Ivory RTAS (OS X)
OS 9 VST: usually /Cubase/VstPlugIns/Ivory VST (OS 9)
OS 9 RTAS: /System Folder/DAE Folder/Plug-Ins/Ivory RTAS (OS 9)

Finally, you may discard the Ivory Preferences folder located in OS X:
/Users/{Home}/Library/Preferences/

In OS 9:
/System Folder/Preferences/

Is there anything special I need to do when moving Ivory from one computer to another using the Migration Assistant?

Once the migration has completed and the Ivory Items folder is on the new system, make sure to take these steps:

First, if you were using an iLok on the old system, make sure to download and install the latest iLok drivers from iLok.com. Older drivers could cause your iLok key not to be recognized.

Second, make sure to update the Ivory Items alias. The alias is called 'Ivory Items', and it is located in:
/Users/{Home}/Library/Preferences/Ivory Preferences/
Click once on the alias, press Cmd-I for Get Info, click the Select New Original button, and select the Ivory Items folder at the correct location.

Finally, download and install one or more of the latest Ivory 1.7 updates here.

Do I have to authorize Ivory in order to use it?

Ivory versions 1.64 and older (including Ivory 1.0 and 1.5 DVD installtions), may be authorized with our original challenge and response system under Panther and Tiger. There is a 5 day grace period in which to run it without authorization. After the 5 days are up, Ivory must be authorized in order to run.

Beginning with Ivory 1.7, iLok authorization is required, and there is no grace period for Ivory 1.7. Once you have moved your Ivory license to iLok, it is no longer necessary to obtain unlock codes using the original system.

What is an iLok & why does Ivory need one?

The following is some information about iLok technology:

The iLok USB Hardware Key (shown below) is a device that holds authorization licenses and connects via the USB port to your computer.

The iLok USB Hardware Key enables you to carry all of your authorizations with you wherever you go using a single key:
  • It's Portable: iLok enables you to easily move authorizations from one computer to another. Use your software at home, at the office, at a studio, or at a friend's house. iLok makes it portable.
  • It's Safe: Authorizations are stored in the secure iLok USB hardware key — not on the computer or hard drive. iLok is immune to problems caused by machine upgrades, disk maintenance, hardware failures, and software updates.
  • It's Convenient: Store all of your iLok-enabled software authorizations on a single iLok USB hardware key, regardless of developer.

Is an iLok key included with my Ivory purchase?

Synthogy products do not include an iLok key. In order to authorize via iLok.com, you must have an iLok key. PACE iLok keys are available directly from PACE (http://www.ilok.com/) or your local dealer.

What is my iLok User ID?

Your iLok User ID is the login name you use to access your account on iLok.com (not your login password). Your iLok.com User ID is sometimes referred to as your "iLok ID", "iLok User ID", or "iLok Account".

Your iLok.com User ID is NOT printed on your iLok. Your iLok User ID is not the manufacturing part number or the serial number printed on your iLok. You would choose your own iLok.com User ID and whatever password you want. If you have already created an account on ilok.com, but have forgotten your password to that account, there is a "password reminder" link on the login page.

I want to move my Ivory license to iLok, what do I need to do?

Here is an overview:
  1. Make sure you have both an iLok key and an ilok.com account with a valid login ID.
  2. Convert your license to iLok and deposit a license into your ilok.com account. To begin moving your license to iLok, please start here:
    http://www.synthogy.com/register/ilokdetails.html
  3. Once you have successfully deposited your Ivory license into your iLok.com account, log into iLok.com within the next 30 days and follow the instructions to download this license to your iLok key. After you log into your ilok.com account, there should be a notification that a license has been deposited, and will guide you through the steps to download it to your iLok key.
  4. Download and install the iLok-compatible version of Ivory 1.7 from:
    http://www.synthogy.com/downloads/mac.html
For more about iLok information, go to iLok.com and click on the Help section of the iLok.com website.

Do you need to already have an iLok USB key to register for an iLok.com account?

No. You can register for an iLok.com account, and then register individual iLok USB keys at a later date.

Does the Ivory system need to be connected to the Internet in order to receive authorizations via iLok.com?

No. You can download assets to an iLok key from any Internet-connected computer with a USB port. The Internet-connected computer must have the iLok Client Software application installed, which is provided as a download when registering for an iLok.com account. You can then use those downloaded iLok authorizations on any Ivory system.

What should I do if my iLok stops working?

First, confirm that the iLok Key is plugged into a working USB port and that the light on the iLok Key is on. For more information, go to iLok.com and click on the Help section of the iLok.com website. For replacement of a broken or defective iLok Key, regardless of which authorizations it contains, customers will need to follow the iLok RMA process (Return Merchandise Authorization) as detailed in the Help section on the iLok.com website.

I have more than one iLok key. Is there a way to combine authorizations onto a single key to free up a USB port?

Yes. You can move authorizations from any iLok key in your iLok account to any other iLok key on that account. You can arrange your licenses in anyway you like on your multiple iLoks. If you wish to use multiple iLoks, purchasing a powered USB hub will allow you to employ multiple iLok keys if you do not currently have additional USB ports available on your system.

Which USB port should I plug the iLok key into?

The iLok key should work in any available USB port on your system; this includes the ports on Apple USB keyboards. However, some users have reported problems with their computer failing to recognize the iLok key when installed in an Apple keyboard port. If you experience this problem, insert the iLok key into one of the available USB ports on the CPU, or use a powered USB hub.

Can I install and authorize Ivory on more than one computer?

For Ivory 1.64 and older, yes, your Ivory Serial number will provide you with three authorizations. If you have a need for additional authorizations, just contact us with your request. As long you are abiding by our End User License Agreement, we will be happy to provide it for you.

Please Note: that while you may install Ivory on more than one computer, in accordance with our "single user" End User License, only a single user should be using the machines, and only one machine would be in use at a time. If you wish to have multiple users running Ivory on more than one machine, please consult our distributor ILIO about a multi-user site license.

I filled out the authorization form on your website, but never got an unlock code emailed to me.

Since the email is sent automatically from software instead of an actual human being, some spam filters may flag it as an unwanted message. In particular, hotmail email accounts seem to have the most trouble with this. The unlock code email is sent from register@synthogy.com. Please make sure that your email filters allow you to receive email from this address, and also from support@synthogy.com so that we can easily communicate with you.

My Unlock Code doesn't work.
The registration web site won't accept my Serial Number.

99% of the time, this is due to a typo when entering numbers into our site, or into the Authorize Ivory application. Make sure that all capitalization and dashes are correct, and that there are no leading or trailing spaces left in the fields.

The registration web site reports that my maximum number of authorizations has been reached.

We understand that things happen from time to time that may cause authorizations to be used up unintentionally. Contact us with your Serial Number, Machine ID, and whether this is for Mac or PC, and we'll usually honor any reasonable unlock requests above the original three.

My Machine ID keeps changing, what do I do?

Re-formatting your hard drive, updating your OS, creating a new user account, or turning File Vault on or off will cause the Machine ID to change. Use of iLok Reset or Interlok Reset will cause problems with your entire system including Ivory, and we neither recommend nor condone the use of either of these programs.

I've lost my Serial Number, what do I do?

Send us an email from an email address you've used in the past to receive an unlock code, and we'll send you back your Serial Number. Unfortunately, we cannot provide Serial Numbers in any other way.

Where do I select each Piano?

The Program menu, located at the top left of the main page. Alternatively, if you want to start from scratch, you can select from the source piano Keysets, located in the menu in the middle of the main page above the Release and Soft buttons.

In Ivory versions 1.0 through 1.56 these are ‘popup’ menus.

Since Ivory version 1.6, these menus have been replaced with the preset ‘browser’ style interface.

What is the sustain resonance?

The sustain resonance models the added resonance of the piano soundboard, strings, and cavity when the dampers are lifted using the sustain pedal. It is accomplished using a DSP algorithm, as opposed to mixing in or switching samples. The sustain resonance adds a bit more CPU load, but does not use up extra voices.

What does the Buffer Size do?

Ivory's Buffer Size adjusts the amount of RAM it uses to stream sample data from disk. Slower computers usually benefit from using the Large buffer size, while faster computers, usually benefit by using the Small buffer size. You may find that a little experimentation will show you the best setting for your particular system.

How do I optimize Ivory’s response for my controller?

In order to take full advantage of Ivory’s timbral and dynamic range it is important to optimize Ivory’s response for the MIDI controller you will be using to play Ivory from. This can be done easily from Ivory’s Velocity Page.

The first step is to determine the range of MIDI values your controller is capable of sending. Not all controllers will send the full range of MIDI velocity values (0-127). You can quickly determine this by using the ‘Set” button on the Ivory Velocity page. You will be prompted to play your softest and loudest notes, in succession, from your controller. This will give you a range of Min and Max velocity values to use with your controller. You can then use the Min and Max velocity controls to tweak those values from there, but the ‘Set’ button will give you a good idea of what your controller is sending.

Once you’ve determined that, you can select an ‘Arc Type’ for the velocity response, and a ‘Hardness’ setting that is tailored to your touch or style of playing. Following this procedure should allow you to produce a velocity response in Ivory that is fined tuned for both your controller and your playing.

One final note, the overall sensitivity and dynamic range will also be affected by the ‘Dynamic Range’ control on Ivory’s main screen page. So once you’ve found a response that suits you on the Velocity Page, the overall dynamic range can be further tweaked to your taste with this control for each program.

My controller only has 88 keys. How do I play the added lower octave on the Bosendorfer?

You can transpose an octave down using the Octave setting on Ivory's main page. Your controller may also be able to transpose down.

What differences do the 'II' keysets have?

The velocity switch points between each sampled velocity are different. The 'II' keysets will respond favoring the softer samples.

What MIDI controllers does Ivory respond to?

Volume (7), Sustain (64), Sostenuto (66), and Soft (67).

What can be done to reduce latency?

Please refer to our Tips section on latency.

Can an Ivory library that has been converted for Intel Mac compatibility be shared with a Power PC Mac?

No, because the file formats are different for Power PC Macs and Intel Macs. An unconverted Ivory library will not run on an Intel Mac, and a converted Ivory library will not run on a Power PC Mac. One caveat is that now, since Ivory 1.7, you can share a single Ivory library between an Intel Mac and a Windows machine, which share the same file format.

Ivory instantiates but I don’t see any programs or keysets.

This is most likely caused by one of the following things:

  • If you are using iLok:
    1. Make sure that you have properly updated to Ivory 1.70 found here.
    2. Make sure your iLok key is plugged in and its light is on. You can verify your iLok key by logging into ilok.com and performing a "synchronize".

  • Sometimes the alias that points to Ivory’s Library (your Ivory Items folder) can become corrupted or broken. The alias is called 'Ivory Items', and in OS X it is located in:

    /Users/{Home}/Library/Preferences/Ivory Preferences/

In OS 9 it is located in:

    /System Folder/Preferences/Ivory Preferences/

Click once on the alias, press Cmd-I for Get Info, click the Select New Original button, and select the Ivory Items folder at the new location. Or, you may simply throw the alias into the trash. The next time you run Ivory, it will ask you to locate the new Ivory Items folder.

  • The contents of your Ivory Items folder must contain library files for each piano model you wish to use. There should be at least 7 or so files for each model, aptly numbered in the file name. If you don't see any of these files, you might be using the wrong Ivory Items folder, or you should run the installer on your DVD.

I hear pops, clicks or dropouts when playing Ivory.
The words 'Slow Disk' appear to the left of the MIDI light on Ivory's main page.

The words 'Slow Disk' appear to the left of the MIDI light on Ivory's main page.
This is usually a performance issue caused by a bottleneck in your system.

If your CPU meter is maxed out, this indicates that the CPU cannot run fast enough to keep up with its demands. Please refer to the Tips section on CPU/Bus Speed.

If the clicks coincide with the appearance of the Slow Disk message to the left of the MIDI light on Ivory's main page, please refer to the Tips section on Disk Performance.

Otherwise the culprit is likely a RAM issue. Refer to the Tips section on RAM usage.

I've updated to Ivory 1.7 and authorized my iLok, but no Keysets load, what do I do?

The first thing to do is download and install the latest 1.70 Update for your system. Also make sure that you have the latest PACE drivers from iLok.com. If you still have trouble, launch the Ivory Library Tool (located in the Ivory Items/Tools folder). Select all and copy the text output, then paste it into an email and send it to support@synthogy.com.

If Ivory were distributed on high-density double-sided floppy disks, how many would be needed?

Ivory 1.5 would come on about 29,535 disks, stacked 307 feet high, the length of a football field. It would take over 8 days to install (not including the time to manually switch disks). Add another 138 feet of floppies for the Italian Grand, and another 4 days of installation time.
